Tenant electricity is locally generated electricity - e.g. via a photovoltaic system on the roof of an apartment building - which is supplied directly to the tenants on site without having to go through the public electricity grid. In this way, property owners and tenants benefit from self-generated electricity.
The electricity generated is distributed directly in the building. If it is not sufficient (e.g. in bad weather), electricity is automatically drawn from the public grid - the so-called residual power - thus ensuring an uninterrupted supply.
In the case of full supply, a provider supplies all of the electricity (PV electricity and grid electricity) to the tenants.
In the case of GGV, only the PV electricity generated on site is shared, while the tenants choose their own remaining electricity.
No, participation is voluntary. Under the GGV (Gemeinschaftliche Gebäudeversorgung, or joint building supply) scheme, tenants can participate in tenant electricity andfreely choose their electricity provider for grid electricity.

Together with solar energy provider e.systeme21, a comprehensive tenant electricity concept was implemented in a residential property in Ulm – from hardware integration to billing on a single platform. The high participation rate demonstrates the strong acceptance among tenants.
Despite short-term challenges such as poor mobile phone reception, the project was implemented flexibly. Today, joint property monitoring ensures stable and efficient operation.
